$755,000 worth of "shame"

Amorous Pop Culture

I'm sure he's sorry but doubt that he's ashamed. He's just the fall guy who got dropkicked by conservative politicians making nice for the fanatics.

John Hogan, president of 1,200-station Clear Channel Radio, told members of the House Energy and Commerce telecommunications subcommittee he was ``ashamed'' of the ``Bubba the Love Sponge'' show. The program, which aired on stations in Florida, recently brought a $755,000 proposed fine from the Federal Communications Commission for sexually explicit content and other alleged indecency violations.

Clear Channel Head 'Ashamed' of Programs

Comments

On the one hand, I am all for allowing private employers (whether Clear Channel or the guy who owns the corner laundromat) to make their own decisions about whom to employ and how to use their employees' services. On the other hand, this whole thing with Howard Stern being suspended and this Bubba guy getting fired is OBVIOUSLY a result of the Federal Government wanting to stick its snout where it does not belong. (Can you tell I have strong libertarian leanings?) It is questionable at best whether the FCC should have such control over content of what goes out over the airwaves. I think their primary purpose should be to ensure that technical rules are followed, i.e. that a pirate radio station does not interfere with the broadcasts of a station that paid to use a certain frequency. Did anyone catch the comment from Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM) the other day to the effect that she wasn't satisfied with interfering with broadcast content, but she wished the FCC could regulate cable content too? Watch out South Park! On a somewhat related note, I am in the middle of reading "Reefer Madness" by Eric Schlosser, which has a long section on the history of obscenity in the United States. It's very interesting and I recommend it highly. It looks like the ghost of Anthony Comstock still haunts us.

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about $755,000 worth of "shame". Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
