Many Girls Admire Porn Stars
» Amorous Pop Culture
A survey of teenage British girls says that a fourth of them would like to be lap dancers.
And some of them like adult film stars. Would even like to be one.
You'd think sex work were somehow less honorable than being, say, an investment banker or Republican Party fundraiser. Which is more likely to take advantage of other people?
Of course the professional prudes would rather they become sterile, eviscerated nuns than providers of dreams.
(Often I feel a bit funny defending the porn industry because I don't watch the stuff myself: bores me to tears. But if it is safe, sane and consensual then self-expression is always better than self-repression.)
Of course the boo-hoo crowd is blaming those cultural titans Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Probably that nitwit girl, what is her name, Simpson? And even I'd imagine The Simpsons.
Sure there is the danger they'll be exploited. But you're damn naïve if you don't know how much exploitation is part of the everyday work life of many Americans. Can you say Wal-Mart?
Get AIDS? The adult entertainment industry probably more cautious nowadays than a horny guy you go out on a date with.
“I found pre-teen girls who were putting pictures of porn stars on their personal web pages and providing links to porn websites,” she says. “I learnt about them through a porn actress who’d published a bestselling autobiography and was surprised when pre-teen girls showed up at signings. They said they saw her as a positive icon.”
Mummy, I want to be a porn star
