Plushies, furries, plushophiles, fursuitophiles

A friend told me of the subculture of "furries". How is the lifestyle like, and how do you know if you belong to it? Are there any furries in NYC? Please respond, I would like to be more educated in this.

Fetish furries (there are non-sexual "fandom" furs too) enjoy anthropomorphic animals (animals w/human characteristics or vice versa) or humans acting like animals, fursuiters enjoy people dressed up like animals and/or acting like animals (possible furry crossovers), and the plushies like...plushies. Zoophilia/beastiality is also usually lumped into this category, though it is fundamentally different from all of these with real animals being abused in the process.
