Can a liberal love a conservative?

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- The run-up to the U.S. presidential election is casting the spotlight on a new crop of Web sites for political-minded singles who are seeking Mr. or Ms. Right ... or Left.

But as such sites make small gains in the polls, another debate is brewing among singles in this politically divided nation: Is it better to find a like-minded mate or to cross party lines in the search for true love?

Oh, it's absolutely possible for conservatives and liberals to love each other. All that's required is a modicum of respect for each others' opinions... ...say, whatever happened to the idea that politics and economics are topics about which intelligent people of good will can think long and hard and then come to different conclusions, in good faith? I mean, sure, there are some opinions that no serious person can hold, but for the most part there's a wide intellectual spectrum of defensible ideas. I am a conservative with a strong libertarian streak... basically a fiscal conservative, a foreign-policy hawk, but a social libertarian/liberal (I have no time or patience for the theocrat cons.) Economically, I'm to the right of most people; on some social issues, well to the left. My wife is an old-school liberal, full-stop--for all intents and purposes a socialist-lite. (The horror!) We have a bit of overlap, opinion-wise, but also considerable differences. We get along beautifully, and we talk politics all the time. On some topics, we have a mutual non-aggression pact, and we don't donate jointly-owned funds to a politician or a cause unless we both support it... but there are plenty of causes that we both support: civil rights (domestic) and human rights (international), education, environment... So we work together on issues where we agree, and where we disagree we can talk about it like grownups. Gmail

Feel free to share your feelings about Can a liberal love a conservative?. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments.
