Thinking About Taking Your Adult Blog Off Blogger?
• Amorous Web, Cyber Sex
I see my note about Blogger killing porn blogs has left a few of you wondering if you should move elsewhere.
Honestly, I have no idea. But I'll share a few thoughts and suggestions.
Blogger is also killing "splogs." These are spam blogs of all sorts. Like many gargantuan operations they sometimes they get it wrong. Many splogs survive. Some innocent blogs that are just personal expression get zapped by accident.
Your content is on someone's server. Do you have a local copy of all you've done if they for whatever reason decide to rid themselves of you? Years ago Yahoo! had a spasm of fear and removed all sorts of adult themed groups. They are back now but they people who saw years of work vanish will never forgive them (including my beloved).
One option is to republish your content on another free service like Live Journal. Same limitations but if one goes you have the other. Though if you care about how well your blog shows up in Google having two copies published might invoked the duplicate content penalty and Google will remove both sites from the search engine results.
If you need hand holding TypePad is a good option. I have nothing but the highest respect for the people at SixApart. They don't seem uncomfortable with, say, BDSM content.
Are you worried about having to setup your own blog software? Edifying Spectacle is powered by Movable Type, which does require comfort with uploading files.
Many webhosts offer "once click" installs of WordPress, Drupal and Mambo. You click a couple of buttons and the databases and such are put in place for you. While Drupal and Mambo are more impressive since you can create a virtual community as well as a blog they are demanding. WordPress is pretty simple. All have support communities with themes and users happy to help other users.
You'll need to sign up with a web host. Edifying Spectacle is hosted by JaguarPC (now running on a dedicated server). The support at JaguarPC has been letter perfect: quick, smart, responsive.
I also have sites hosted by DreamHost (NB: that link while it will give me a few dollars has the signup fee removed if you opt to make a one or two year prepayment). Honestly I like JaguarPC better but have no complaints with DreamHost.
You'll need to register your domain. I have twenty odd domains registered with GoDaddy. Easy and cheap.
It isn't that hard. I went from having a few pages attached to my Road Runner account to setting up this site.
As webmasters go I'm a self-taught half-assed amateur. But I'm happy to answer questions if only to point you to a site where you may get decent advice.
