The Rapex

Rape is evil. Some women never recover, forever losing their sexuality and perhaps their partner.

But the Rapex seems to me a clumsy invention only Rube Goldberg might've been able to love (the device's inventor aside of course).

Some say the inventor, Sonette Ehlers, deserves a medal; others, that she needs help.

The device, which is worn inside a woman's body, hooks onto a rapist during penetration. It must be surgically removed.

Ehlers, a former medical technician, said the rape trap would be so painful for a rapist that it would disable him immediately, enabling his victim to escape. She insisted it would cause no long-term physical damage to the assailant, and could not accidentally injure the woman.

Some women's activists call the device regressive, putting the onus on individual women to address a societal, male problem.

(Perhaps some feminists do but, really, anything sane that prevents rape should be welcomed.)

A New Strategy to Fight Rapists

"Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time," Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex", a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.

South Africa anti-rape condom aims to stop attacks

The word condom is slowly being pounded into meaninglessness.

Ehlers said the "rapex" hooks onto the rapist's skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.

"He will obviously be too pre-occupied at this stage," she told reporters in Kleinmond, a small holiday village about 100 km east of Cape Town.

"I promise you he is going to be too sore. He will go straight to hospital."

The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man by surgery, which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.

It also reduces the chances of pregnancy or HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases from the attacker by acting in the same way as a female condom.

Having read all of the above, what image does the Rapex put into your mind? (You S&M fans from Collar Me don't count.)

I think its a good idea. maybe it will make potential rapists think twice about doing it. some people are saying that is is barbaric or anti-male but what they dont understand is something does have to be done about rape, because you cannot just sit about and wait for some indecent people to change their opinions, some men really do see women as sexual playthings, for whenever they want them. this solution offers something to possibly prevent the event occuring in the first place, something to help identify the attacker and something to offer protection against STD’s.

You know … the thing is, this doesn’t quite prevent rape. It just prevents it from taking more than one thrust. The penis still has to enter the vagina for it to work — and the penis has to be long enough to hit it hard enough to spring the trap.

It seems the probability of this(by itself) working is low. What happens if the rapist is holding a gun to the woman’s head? Won’t he be more likely to pull the trigger, if not out of reflex, then out of anger? What if the rapist has other intentions such as anal intercourse? I think self-defense or martial arts training is the best option for ANYONE who is worried about being helpless in such a situation.

I wish my Mistress would get one!

I think its a bad idea. Thinking from a point of a rational impulsive rapist. He would attempt to insert a foreign object to ensure that such a precaution does not exist which may ‘endanger’ him.

1) Insertion of foreign object could cause infection.

2) Assuming the trap is inplace. If springed, the device could potentially injure the woman if i) The rapist is particularly sadistic and thinks of it as poetic justice to mutilate the woman’s organ in a twisted sense of retaliation. ii) The rapist is particularly sadistic to a certain extent and causes the rape to be more traumatic. iii) The insertion of the foreign object dislodges the device and the device ensnares the woman instead.

If I was female, I would probably prefer carrying a small gun than to rely on such contraception. However in countries or states with strict gun enforcement policies, this may be a winning ace, albeit extremely unpredictable and risky.

As a side note, rape is best dealt with as a preventive measure rather than counter measure. In my opinion, violent pornographic films does not appear to help sate such rapists. The media with the concept of ‘sex sells’ does not improve the situation either.

At any rate, if the concept of sex is not constantly flaunted or woman is not portrayed as a sex symbol in today’s popular main stream media etc. I doubt rape would be as prominent.

i think its a good idea in that something has been done finally to checkmate the high rate of rape, however it should be noted that most rapist are usually people who are not in there right senses so i guess this could lead to more women being killed after a rape incidence rather than just surviving one.

What happened to good old fassion cappy spray, pepper spray, 50kv stungun, or with a bit more grunt like a 200 thousand volt stun gun. why not change this to a device like so

/ / / / / / / / / / | \ _\ \ \ \ \ \ \ __

with 1cm spikes that impale the male, hahhahaha, and as he removed his penis from it, it removes his penis from his body, or tare his penis to shreds, either way, i also think all current and future sex offenders male and female should have their DNA kept on file, i dont see how nothing has been done yet to prevent rape sooner? i mean there must be something, y not legalise stunguns in all countries.or how about a device simular to the previous one, only that has a - wire running along the top of the female condom, and a + wire running down the bottom of the device and as the rapist inserts his penis or finger, a nice 50kv stun is awaiting for him, this way there is no harm that can come to the female, only extreme pain for the male.all that or just carry a 9mm, problem fixed, last idea is get brest machine guns like in austin powers, lol.

I think it’s awesome. It’s mere existance is a deterrent. This is a great development and I wish its inventor all the luck in the world.

Jesus Christ! It’s about time someone did something to show those perverted rapist! I’m a major feminist, and I think this is a great idea. Like what Hrmm thinks said, I think this thing should remove the penis. If a man should go that far to get what he wants, then he should have something taken away, just to be fair.

Vaginal devices intended to prevent intercourse are centuries old indeed, particularly when you include those that were to be worn compulsorily by women when their men were away. More recently, this was quite an area of innovation in the United States about 100 years ago.

If you peruse the patents filed for these intravaginal inventions, you will find contraptions intended to perform the sadistic fantasies of “Hrmmm thinks” and “Vaginal Teenager” above: Metal traps that slice the penis on entry or withdrawal. Spring-loaded spikes that launch into the urethra. Anyone looking over these twisted devices today can imagine the danger they would pose to a woman who wore them, aside from the obvious danger to any man who tested them, presuming they worked. Of course, history demonstrates that all of these devices failed as viable, marketable solutions. While the latex and plastics of this kindler, gentler version should prove far more comfortable and safe for occasional wear, I remain skeptical, particularly when depended on in the course of an attack.

I agree with each of Passerby’s enumerated concerns, and with one of his conclusions. A woman who can confidently protect herself with a firearm, prior to or even during an attack, is in a far better position than another woman with the attack necessarily well underway with an enraged rapist now bleeding(?) into her, not knowing the extent of his injury…perhaps considering his “manhood” destroyed, police attention now unavoidable, and with little left to lose…

The latter scenario that I’ve described does not come from field experience with this device, but then neither does the inventor’s promise. The promise that the attacker will be “too sore” to continue the attack in any manner and “go straight to hospital.” I can only assume from this that South Africa is a far less litigious environment than the United States.

Granted, a reliable firearm and training costs far more than a 20 cent avenging “condom”. To women fortunate enough to afford any method of self-defense, whether or not your jurisdiction tramples on your right to use one, it’s your call.

Final notes:

As for pepper spray and stun guns, we’ve heard about pepper spray/mace making determined attackers more, well, determined: I won’t belabor it. All of these items impress me as being about trying for that split-second distraction to possibly, hopefully, escape.

The assertion of “some women’s activists” that self-defense is not the individual’s problem or responsibility says more about “some women’s activists” than about anything else.

I have a 50kV stun gun. Unfortunately, I feel more comfortable recommending it to the sexually adventurous for electro play than to anyone for serious self-defense.

while i have thought of similar chastity devises my self in my anger at rapists … my fear would be that angry women might use it against unsuspecting innocent men … remember them? i agree … stick to stun guns and pepper spray …

Reminds me of the anti rape devices in “Complete Guide To Unlawful Carnal Knowledge For Fantasy Role-Playing Games”. You are still going have to wear the thing and the rapist still has to enter you so you still are raped, just not for so long. Use it in the US and you probably get sued by the rapist.

sounds great. regarding suggestions for alternate measures, like stunguns and martial arts training, or warnings of lawsuits: this is going to be aimed at Africa. Not everyone has access to stunguns. Even if the idea bombs, it’s a step in finding solutions.

Not so great an idea, not at all. First it doesnt prove, that a rape took place, just that vaginal sex took place. I wonder how many women in unhappy marriages will use this to “show what a brutal pervert their husband always was!”. So there ist still word against word, with the two improvements that the sex is proven, and that no Aids or whatever can be transmitted that way. But if I was a rapist and heard about that technology, I would order the next woman I rape to turn around and rape her in the ass (the official homepage says there is no such device for men, so it cant be used anally i presume), or in the mouth. So it will possible change the sad fate of women of being raped vaginally into the sad fate of being raped anally or orally.

Just wait till this woman gets ahold of nanotechnology.

Sonette Ehlers, inventor of the Rapex, claims that it is neither “lethal nor fatal” to the rapist. However, examination of the structure of the device indicates that it can potentially cause catastrophic—even fatal—effects for the rapist. Ehlers claims that, once the penis is trapped inside Rapex, the rapist is unable to urinate. This is caused by the latex, held in place by a minimum of 30 barbs, stretched tightly over the tip of the penis. Therefore, the rapist’s urethral opening is effectively sealed. Bodily fluids cannot escape the Rapex, thus preventing contamination by the AIDS virus. However, the rapist is also prevented from urinating. If he seeks medical assistance immediately, the Rapex will be removed surgically and the normal urine flow restored. However, it is likely that the rapist will not seek medical help. He may fear being identified as a criminal, or he may fear the outcome of surgery on his penis. He may believe that, with sufficient persistence and force, he can remove the Rapex himself. Or, he may simply go into denial, hoping that alcohol and/or drugs will inhibit the pain caused by the barbs. At any rate, delay in seeking emergency treatment is also exacerbating his problem with urination. He cannot properly void his bladder (the latex sealing against his urethral opening is unyielding), and the bladder continues to receive fluid. Although the bladder is a flexible organ, it will eventually rupture when it can accommodate no more urine. Rupture causes the urine to spill into the chest cavity, followed by the rapists’s death. Thus, from a medical perspective, the few centimeters of latex clamped to the penis tip are a far greater threat than the barbs embedded in the shaft. Yes, the device is potentially fatal.

Why can’t women carry revolvers?

where is the male rapex? i mean .. we don’t wanna be biased against males here.

I understand the function of the device but there are so many flaws in it .. why don’t we just give woman guns/knifes so they don’t get raped? it would be just as effective.

when exactly did we start attacking the reproductive systems in humans?

really .. this world has gone to shit.

for example lets say this worked and sold well.

If i was a rapist I would use objects to test the vagina for shredding condom like devices. THUS completely ruining the devices intentions. SEEMS PRETTY STUPID .. you should invent something where the man blows up .. or implant teeth into the woman that are as sharp as knifes .. like jaws .. and replace their eyes with pepper spray eyes .. you can see where im going with all this .. the world is doomed if we start going down this route; its the same with anything new .. there will always be a way around it.

I just learned about this, and I think it could definitely change some things. Yes, the idea of my penis getting stuck with 50 barbs makes me squirm, but you know what?

I don’t have to worry about that, because I’m not a rapist. Only rapists should be worried. Just imagine millions of women who know Karate and wear one of these things! It could change the world.

Only rapists should be worried? How about the girl that forgets she has this shit in and you stick your penis in her.

I guess you will worry about it then.

Your feelings?

Please share your feelings about The Rapex. Please stick to the topic of the entry. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
