Dr. William G. Reiner talks about the failed, horrible treatment of intersex infants.

That you can castrate a male at birth, create a female genital structure, raise the child as a girl, and in a majority of the cases, they'll still recognize themselves as male. Now many of the children I've seen are still young. I don't know what will happen as they get older.

The larger point is that it's been a monstrous failure, this idea that you can convert a child's sex by making over the child's genitals in the sex you've chosen. This began in the 1950's, when surgeons who felt helpless when they encountered intersex children thought they were helping them with sexual reassignment. The psychologists were saying, "You can make a boy or a girl or anything you want." It wasn't true. The children often knew it.

I think that it's a hard situation for parents and family and child no matter how open-minded the parents are. I think we all know now (or at least a lot of us) that we should wait until the child becomes older to see if that individual is growing up to be male or female. But, what do you do during that time? Do you treat him/her as a boy or girl. Do you call him/her a he or a she. How do you dress him/her? Not to mention the social implications of being "different". It's just an incredibly difficult situation for everyone. But I do think that the most important thing is love and acceptance of the parents and family. And with that I think that it can be overcome. I have always said that if parents cannot love and accept their children, no matter what they are or what they become, that they shouldn't have any.

I think that honestly scocity needs to realize that there is a third gender. People treat this subject like the plauge. Becuase of it's "religous implications". I say take the zelots out, and people would realize this. Too many religous type folks will chalk this up to the work of satan. People may want to think that our scocity has moved past that, but really it has not. They will look at it as an abomination, work of the devil and other such. Instead of the reality of the matter. We are not a two gendered specics. We are a three gendered specices. Just the third gender is much more rarer than the other two. If this was taught to children from birth just like male and female is, then it would'nt be about oh my they have both, It woudl just come down to. We have a child of the rare gender. Maverick:

Raising children with intersex in a third gender would put them in a horribly awkward position, it would be downright cruel. Besides there's a whole constellation of intersex conditions, why should we have one big gender for all of them? What about intersex, yet obviously male people like men with klienfelters syndrome; or intersex, but obviously female people, like women with mild congenital adrenal hyperplasia? And are we to treat the entire androgen insensitiviy spectrum as a third gender no matter how extremely feminine or close to standard male they may be?

There is no thrid gender, as an intersexed female i can assure of that. what the world needs to accept is not that we are so different from everyone else. instead something even more simply must be accepted, sex is not defined by ones genitals, end of story. it's not always defined by genetics either, many intersexed childrens genetics are even confusing, and while that does make it hard to determine ones gender, it should simply be relised that when a gender is assigned to an intersexed child, it may end up being wrong. as such unless reasignment surgery is needed for health reasons, it should NEVER be done to an intersexed child. NEVER. one last thing, gender identiy is not the only problem intersexed children face. for example i suffer from C.A.H. which causes severe, life threatening, health issues when my immune system is put understress. we also suffer from the pain we feel about or genitals, no matter how right their gender role is. but no matter what we are not a thrid gender, nor fourth or fith. we simply chanllange the worlds paradigm of what makes one male of female. we're just as male, or female, as anyone else... thats what the wqorld needs to accept.

I also was born intersexed. I must give kudos to Katie as I agree with her words. SRS should never be done to an infant. It ruins the better part of our lives if the doctor or parents choice is incorrect.

but to those who are intersexed..what what are you sexually from a chromosome standpoint..as in xy or yy chromosome or what ever the combination is I do not remember..but if I were intersexed or reassigned I believe that knowing this would at least give me a starting point for thought of all this. D
