My beloved is transgendered. For various reasons they've always evoked a special protective feeling in me. This article is one of the saddest things I've read in a long time.
... Inmates are housed on the basis of genitalia, they told her, and in their eyes she was incontestably male. So Thompson took matters into her own hands — literally. In two separate incidents, she amputated her own male genitalia, nearly bleeding to death in the process.
“I thought she had to be nuts,” recalls attorney Bruce Bistline, who handled Thompson’s case. “But apparently that sort of self-mutilation is not extraordinary in the transgender prison population. The level of desperation is just that high.”

Let’s face it, if this person had nearly bled to death after slashing his wrists, he’d be in a locked unit receiving intensive psychiatric treatment. Which is where he should be now, instead of holding a pity party.

Am I the only one puzzled by this story? I keep rereading the sentence”she amputated her male genetalia, nearly bleeding to death in the process” wondering who proofreads these things…….male genetalia=male=male pronouns. I wonder also if such seriously destructive behavior is encouraged by bleeding hearts who refuse to consider this as a suicide attempt (just as if he had nearly bled to death after slashing his wrists).
