Transsexual prisoner denied bra

Gender Outsiders: Transgendered & Others

Being in prison is bad. Being transgendered there has to be even worse. And there are the insane complications of being atypically gendered and having to cope with a literal minded bureaucracy.

State Department of Corrections’ policy says it determines what type of clothing and property to give men and women based on their genitals.

“The hormone therapy caused her to grow breasts,” Frakes told the Wisconsin State Journal newspaper of Madison. “But she’s not allowed to have a bra.”

Comments

This is wrong, I think. It sounds like cruelty to me.
She should be able to wear a bra because she do indeed have breast.
From the article, it would appear that the prisoner in question is a biological male and hence presumably in a male correctional facility. I can only imagine the disruption in the general prison population in having a man wearing a bra in their midst. Get a grip----when incarcerated you can't expect to choose your own clothing style. I can see nothing wrong with prison officials issuing gender-appropriate prison garb.
