Transvestite wants to be in female jail

INDONESIAN police have rejected a well-known transvestite's demand to be placed in a women's prison following his arrest for marijuana possession, police said yesterday.

Avi, who headlines drag shows and is a regular on the talk show circuit, was arrested at his home over the weekend in South Jakarta with four grams of marijuana, said anti-narcotics police official Captain Sutana.

Police said they nabbed Avi, also known as Joko WS, after receiving a tip from neighbours that he was smoking pot.

Avi's request to be held in a female prison has been denied, said Sutana, who like many Indonesians uses a single name.
