Evolutionary theorists and the female orgasm

Gender Studies

Evolutionary theorists say that female orgasm is:

Merely a bonus.

Assured early man that their mates wouldn't be bonding with other men while they were out chasing meat.

Makes women want to do the cooking.

Relieves pelvic vascular congestion.

Prevented suspicious men from aborting their wives pregnancies lest she be carrying another man's sperm product.

So what are we to make of the fact that women may be getting a free ride? Lloyd suggests that it helps explain a lot about women's sexual behaviour, most notably the wide range of orgasmic experience. If the species doesn't depend on it, we can all relax: there isn't a single natural or optimal model, and neither frigidity nor promiscuity is dysfunctional. Further, considered alongside studies of two Polynesian communities where all women reportedly climax, she writes, the by-product explanation suggests that ultimately female orgasm may be an acquired response, an innate capacity that women can learn to turn on or off.

From a Darwinian standpoint, female orgasm may be as frivolous as male nipples

If one were to grant penis envy should one simply grant multiple orgasm envy?

Comments

Well dammit, I can't find the info to back it up now, but there's a theory that female orgasmic function in humans is carried over from the animal kingdom where it does have a purpose (and here I'm referring to female orgasmic response as simply taking longer, not being hit or miss). In many animal social situations, the alpha male gets first shot at mating. But what if for some reason the alpha male - while being the strongest - is not reproductively viable? Because the female hasn't finished with being in heat, she is able to mate with the 'next in line', if you will. The stronger sperm wins, thereby ensuring the strength of the line.
The BBC documentary "The Human Body", made a few years ago, contains footage that clearly shows the famale cervix "dipping" during orgasm, into a pool of deposited seminal fluid. This was apparently only observed for the first time in the late 90's - understandably, as it required an endoscopic camera and a willing subject! For those not lucky enough to have seen this in action, the cervix literally plunges down through 90 degrees, like a drunken headbanger at a Metallica concert. (Down is a relative term, as the footage provides no frame of reference, and doesn't state whether the subject is missionary or doggie at the time.) Having (erm) witnessed this, I certainly believe it's possible that this is *intended* to increase the chance of insemination by drawing semen into the uterus - the "upsuck" theory, as mentioned in the article you cite. Though this explanation "lacks scientific rigour" (how would you prove this?), I find it doubtful that such a dramatic movement of the gateway to the uterus, at the exact moment when it would be procreationally practical, is some evolutionary accident. I don't know if this documentary is available in the US. The only link I could find is to the BBC Shop: http://www.bbcshop.com/invt/ebbcdvd1067

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Evolutionary theorists and the female orgasm. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
