Deleting Online Predators Act

Laws and Politicians, Mostly Bad

Could be tough times ahead for online communities like Myspace. Say hello to the proposed Deleting Online Predators Act.

"Sites like Myspace and Facebook have opened the door to a new online community of social networks between friends, students and colleagues," Fitzpatrick said in a statement posted to his web site. "However, this new technology has become a feeding ground for child predators that use these sites as just another way to do our children harm." ...

The "Deleting Online Predators Act" would also require the FCC to publish a sort of annual blacklist of "commercial social networking websites and chat rooms that have been shown to allow sexual predators easy access to personal information of, and contact with, children."

Within the bill, the definition of "social networking site" is left somewhat vague.

In an effort to prevent minors from viewing child pornography, the bill would bar minors from accessing a social networking site, defined as one that "allows users to create web pages or profiles that provide information about themselves and are available to other users; and offers a mechanism for communication with other users, such as a forum, chat room, email, or instant messenger."

House Bill Might Ban MySpace, Friendster

Comments

hm. if only they could somehow figure out a way to ban access to children by the relatives, friends and clergymen who are far more likely to abuse them than people on the internet.

I have proposed a policy that would make registering name, address, drivers license ID number and Email address a requirment. If places like myspace.com, owners, failed to honor requirement they would face jail time and/or a fine, or both.

If owners of online services do not take measures to protect kids then they are more then less contributing to the overall problem.

If all people had to be registered fully then there wouldnt be such a desire to prey on children on the internet being that if they did prey they wouldnt be able to claim “I didnt do it”

The government needs to know about who is on the internet before they are allowed to have an account.

If the internet was governemnt run then we wouldnt have problems with sexual predators preying on children. It would be the end of the era-
