But I can’t forgive a lack of romance and passion. With full acknowledgement of the practical parts of the lives of two people living together without passion the rest of the relationship becomes trivial.
And what could make for more tedious reading than today was happy: hope revived; this evening was awful: hope dies. The real life equivalents of soap opera are if anything more padded and irresolute than their televised counterparts.
Some of us grow up jaded without experience to justify it. Others (me) thought of what are inelegantly called relationships as a series of ecstasies coated with fairy-sugar. Getting my psychic ass kicked repeatedly for two years was what I needed to get on and enjoy being a young gay man and not pine for what wasn’t to be had.
One gay man's romantic failures
So a twink must be smooth and youthful. How young? I remember the happy surprise when as a young queer I saw a couple of guys with a little gray in their hair whose youthful charm aroused me.
Ted Randall is a square Joe from Anytown, USA (once famous when zip codes were first introduced). Ted’s dilemma as the back cover eloquently explained is whether he should “give his lean, hard-muscled body to a woman or be enslaved by the overpowering masculinity of a hot-blooded male.”
M. told me that the local object of lust mentioned at the beginning had gotten in trouble for giving someone a blowjob at the rear of one of UNC-Chapel Hill’s buildings. The image of the nearby guy on his knees kept itself in my imagination for several hours.
