But "queer" animals, it seems, are about as common as the birds and the bees, with more than 450 species engaging in homosexuality or even life-pairing, according to a University of Newcastle academic.
In a presentation to be delivered at the Australian Museum Society tomorrow, biologist Geoff MacFarlane will argue that same-sex activity occurs regularly in many types of animals - from mammals, birds and reptiles, to amphibians, fish, and invertebrates.
