Salvation Army fights gay partnership benefits

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual

Let people starve, have to keep those queer from becoming legally recognized life-partners.

The Salvation Army is threatening to close soup kitchens for tens of thousands of New York's homeless and walk away from other projects if the city enacts legislation requiring firms that do business with New York to offer health benefits to the partners of gay staffers.

The evangelical faith is prepared to give up the $70 million a year in city funding it receives and pull out of New York entirely the New York Post reports.

Salvation Army Uses Homeless To Fight Gay Benefits

Comments

I would lose all respect for The Salvation Army if they changed their mind. How can you respect an organization (even a straight one) if they base their actions on money. If they have to tolerate the beliefs of the gay/lesbians, then why can we not tolerate their beliefs? I know many, many people who have HIV have received help from them and their sexual orientation has never been a problem. Give 'em a break, puh-lease. toleration needs to be for all people - or we need to quit spouting about it.
I agree with Martha's comment that we should not force them to change unless they are willing to change. What I would suggest is you keep track of the kettles you pass and how much you were thinking of donating. Then, towards the end of the shopping season, go to your local GLBT friendly church or organization that assist our community and make a donation. Tell them why you are making this donation and that you would rather help a GLBT friendly "faith based initiatives" rather than one that continues to discriminate. Every bit helps so even if it is $10, please consider donating to help those less fortunate in our community. We cannot dictate to The Salvation Army what their beliefs should include but we sure can make a difference by not supporting them.
