Masturbation worse than heroin!

Laws and Politicians, Mostly Bad , • Religious Meddlers, Do-gooders , • Zealots, Crusaders, Pests

Having just lost my lover of four years to crack addiction I find the suggestion that downloading dirty pictures from the web is worse or more addictive disgusting. The claim that masturbation is worse than heroin is amazingly laughable and horrifyingly sad. Damned prudes.

Pornography addicts can face more difficulty coming off their habit than coke users, said Mary Anne Layden, Center for Cognitive Therapy at University of Pennsylvania. Whilst coke users can get the substance out of their bloodstream, pornographic images can linger dangerously in the mind.

Internet porn more dangerous than crack cocaine

I think these 'professionals' are confusing addiction with compulsive behavior. I think there is a difference. Does pornography 'cause' masturbation? Well, yes, in my (fairly extensive) experience. Is this a bad thing? Only if masturbation becomes such a compulsive behavior that it interferes with nornal life, stops you interacting with real people, makes you neglect other important aspects of life, etc. Otherwise, it's a pleasant pastime, and also a way of ensuring that everything is in working order for those of us without a sexual partner. I think there is a certain element of 'use it or lose it' when it comes to sexuality. In my view there is a lot wrong with porn. Much of it is exploitative, and I think that the recent AIDS situation with adult performers has highlighted the extent to which porn producers ignore health and safety at work issues by pretending that it is a free speech issue. More like a wagonloads of cash issue IMO. For myself, I prefer the written to the visual, and the well-written to the badly-written. As a woman, I've found porn very helpful in learning to masturbate effectively, something which I wasn't very good at for a long time. I think it's hard for young people to understand how much more information about sexuality is around these days- although I'm only in my 40's, when I was starting to get busy sexually, 25 years ago, there wasn't even such open discussion of sex in women's magazines as there is now. "pornographic images can linger dangerously in the mind." Well, duh! The key word is 'dangerously' in this sentence. What is its purpose, and why is it dangerous to have images lingering in the mind?
American Puritanism and religious fundamentalism remains the most pernicious obstacle to mental hygiene in the world to-day. Though imprisoned and persecuted repeatedly throughout his life the works of Wilhelm Reich and later of Fritz Perls, remind us that true character development and human growth can only be achieved through the acceptance of our sexual identities and a less reactionary attitude to orgasm and the relief that the action of full acheivement can produce. The dirty secret the world maintains is that we are all basically terrified of our animal nature asserting itself in the moment of orgasmic discharge. Reich died a pioneer of the exploration of the orgasm and his treatise the Function of the Orgasm, remains the most embaressing indictment of faschism ever written. It is to be regretted that his death and persecution was undertaken by servants working for the "land of the free and home of the brave".
Should read "more fun than heroine"
I just read an interesting article on masturbation as a moral panic. Not long ago in American history masturbation was considered deviant behavior, and barbaric devices were invented to prevent children from doing it. Mary Anne Layden seems to be a throwback to that era. If you want to check out the article, here's the link: http://www.nsrc.sfsu.edu/HTMLArticle.cfm?Article=439&PageID=166
Thank you, my pan-sexual webmaster, for this one. It is reassuring to the rest of us to see that while a significant number of Americans, and Layden is a true classic, are obviously as crazy as hoot-owls, there are many of you who are sane. Keep it up. R
"Erotoxins" is what the anti-porn, anti-masturbation crazies were calling the pleasurable hormone release that accompanies orgasm. Many thanks for all of your comments.
I ve never taken heroin but I believe the effects of masturbation are very similar. Im a sex addict. I cant live without masturbating for a single day. AFter a wank, bizarre but pleasant images come into my mind and Im completley at peace - at least for an hour - in a lovely relaxed semiconscious state. When I dont masturbate I get aching in my head neck and shoulder and even my back. My brain feels fuzzy and pressure fills my head. I have done it 5 times a day and its a terrible feeling when I wake the next day. I feel like my spirit is decaying. As I said, Ive never taken heroin but this is my heroin. The only real difference between the two is that I dont have to go to drastic lengths to pay for my addiction. For some people both addictions can be just as destructive.
