What a shame to hear a story like this one. My father-in-law grew up in a rough neighborhood when he was young. Being the eldest of 10 kids, he really had to fight for attention and affection from his parents. He got into trouble with the law a lot as a teenager and finally moved out on his own when he was 16. He lived a pretty good life as a man and was determined to find the kind of love and affection he so desperately desired. He got married, had a family, had a good job, and everything seemed to be going fine. He retired when he was 65 after 40 years with the construction business he’d been working at. Less than a year later he lost his eldest son to a motorcycle accident,then his second son got caught up in drugs and went to jail just months after his first sons death. Soon he found out that his only daughter was getting married and moving away. He started sinking into a deep depression and all the demons he faced as a child were coming back to haunt him. All his life he had been hiding a dark secret. A side of himself that could only come out when he felt really alone. But he still had his wife and his youngest son so he didn’e feel too alone. Then one day he found out that the home he started his family in with so many memories etched in its walls was going to be torn down and the property sold. He was heart broken. He, his wife and youngest son moved into another house up the street but it didn’t feel like home. Then his youngest son (my boyfriend of 10 years) moved out to be with me as we started our new family. Thats when dad started to take a turn for the worst. With no garage to fix a car in or have long talks with his kids, no garden to tend too, and no job to keep him busy, his dark side finally took over. Dad was arrested and later convicted at age 67 for rapping his grandaughter, his late sons second child. She was only 14 at the time. He faces 10 years to life in prison and will be eligable for parole soon. Almost everyone was shocked,including my boyfriend who idolized him. Everyone but me that is. One night, before this all happened, I got to see a part of his darker side when my mother-in-law went away on a trip for church. I use to stay at their house a lot because they lived in town and I lived in the country. But everything including school was in town. My friends, the club, everything. One night I came home late and my boyfriend and I got into an argument. He left and I started crying. Dad came by to console me like he usually did and that’s when he started kissing me. I was so in shock that I froze. I didn’t know what to do. Then the phone rang. It was jake calling for dad to come pick him up. After that he made like nothing had happened. That’s when I first realised something was wrong with him and we never had one of our private talks ever again. I tried telling my boyfriend but he got angry with me and said he didn’t believe me. It really hurt me that he thought I would make something like that up. After dad was arrested my boyfriend went crazy. He walked down the road looking for someone to pick a fight with. He didn’t know what to do or how to feel. Before this all happened my boyfriend was a pretty self-assured person and now he’s always second guessing himself. Then one day his mother started telling him stories about all the things dad had done to her when they were younger. How he raped her and got her pregnant with their first son, how he slept with her younger sister who was only 16 when he was 25 and so on. She also told my boyfriend about all the times dad cheated on her, sometimes right infront of her. Somehow I don’t think my boyfriend was listening. I don’t think he wanted to believe that the affectionate and loving old man he called “dad” was this heartless monster his mother was talking about. Then one day he came to me and said he was sorry for not believing me and he started to cry. He said that if he had believed me when I told him so many years ago, he might have been able to protect his niece and find help for his dad and things would still be okay. Since all of this has happened my boyfriend appeared to be okay, claiming he was strong but that he would need me more than ever now. He seemed to be taking everthing well until I recently found out that he had been smoking crystal-meth and other types of drugs. When I use to think of his family and how they used to be, I pictured a ship. It’s big and strong and stays afloat, yet there’s something bubbling under the surface. Now I realize they were the Titanic. Considered unsinkable, until they failed to see the danger ahead that put a big hole in them. And now I think my boyfriend is going down with the ship. We have to beautiful babies together, a boy and a girl. I remember my boyfriend telling me before all this happened that he wanted to start a family because he wanted them to be able to see their grandparents. Being the youngest and born to his parents when they were almost forty, he begged me to get pregnant. But now I don’t think it matters to him, for I don’t think he will ever be able to trust dad around the kids. With so much tragedy, and so much loss, I can’t believe my boyfriend and his family made it this far. Mom gets a lot of lond-distance calls and calls from the prison. She’s been the strongest one through all this. When my boyfriends brother heard dad was going to be coming to same prison he was going to be in, he asked the judge to relocate him to another prison far away, even though he knew he wouldn’t be able to have visits from his girlfriend and their two kids for awhile, being so far away. And although my boyfriends doing drugs right now, he still acts as though he is so strong. That’s when I realized that his family is still the strong ship I use to picture them being, even though they went under, they went under together. No one bailed out, no one was left behind. I guess now I picture them as being in a the “same boat,” but that’s a good thing.
