Desperate Strippers
» Sex Workers
Did you see all those articles some months back that said the downturn in the economy had caused many women to become professional dominatrices? The original report was unsourced and made it sound like women took to beating men of so naturally. I’m a guy who likes to be beaten but wasn’t foolish enough to believe it. A surprisingly large number of writers chose to repeat it as a source of easy thrills.
More serious is a report that women - many of whom would rather not - are turning to stripping so they can pay the bills.
‘Women who are doing this because they’re desperate for money, the ones who find it morally repugnant … will feel the toll immediately,’ said Bernadette Barton, a sociology professor and author who has studied the business. ‘No one should have to violate their own moral center to make a living.’
One person who shouldn’t engage in sex work - of any sort - is one who is uncomfortable with it.
‘What’s surprising me is how many women are coming in not because this is something they want to do, but because it’s something they have to do,’ Ellis said. ‘It’s more a sense of desperation over the last year and a half, when the economy started taking a fall.’
This could produce lots of self-doubt and self-destructive behavior.
