Lap dancer vs. feminist scholar

Lap dancers versus feminists in Glasgow. But the latter have found allies in conservative politicians.

Sheetal Revis curls her legs around the steel pole and sinks slowly to the floor under the spangled light of the disco balls suspended high above her. It is a wet weeknight in Glasgow and the 19-year-old is getting ready for work.

I like my job, says the lap dancer. No you don't, says the feminist helping city try to shut clubs

Just goes to show you that old steriotypes die very hard.

It seems a little too easy to stereotype this whole debate. Lapdancers = pro-sex = good! Feminists = anti-sex = repressed = bad! And so on. Can’t we get beyond that?

Yeah, some lapdancers do love their jobs. That’s great. I’m not worried about them at all. I’m a little concerned about the social effects of lapdancing, but that’s another story. That can wait.

What IS worrying is the number of lapdancers who are exploited. Who aren’t doing it for fun. Who maybe have huge debts to pay, drug habits, customers who bother them, abusive boyfriends who leech their hard-won cash. Who wouldn’t do it if there were alternatives. These women do need a lot of help - financial help, emotional support and otherwise. Everyone must surely agree with that.

So who actually helps them? There are projects - a growing number, but never enough - set up solely to rescue these unlucky women out of poverty and misery. Secret shelters across the country to escape abusive partners, drug rehabilitation centres for dependent addicts, underground networks for women who want to escape. And who exactly runs these projects? Well, you do get the odd religious maniac, but mostly it’s those evil feminists. The ones who hate women so much they want to, um, help them.

So how about cleaning up the lapdance trade? Once it’s pimp-free, exploitation-free and staffed by well-paid, happy smiley bunnies who really want to be there, we can start to have a rational debate about how necessary it is. Until then, it might be worth quitting the hackneyed “feminists against women’s rights” stuff and actually listening with an open mind to some of the things we have to say.

Okay?

Yeah right…”research”

I bet this was the type of research that was just just by assumptions.

How many times does it have to be stated that these women choose to enter that type of work?

If there is abuse going on then she should leave. It’s as simple as that.

Unemployed? Not much financial resources?

What then to do?

It’s called the separtment of social security whereby you can get help while looking or training for a career.

I do not in anyway agree or even listen to what a bunch of idiots such as feminazis make up purely to get their stupid agendas met.

Isn’t it obvious yet that feminists hate men AND women and that their sole mission is to drive these two apart by any means necessary such as making up such utter rubbish such as this “research”?

Why oh why do people even bother to listen to them?
