That the British National Health Service is telling boys and girls that they have a right - an odd choice of words I think - to an orgasm and that orgasms are good for bodily health is the kind of story that propagates across the web in a flash.

That sexual self-expression is a right is something all good men and women must agree with. But should be coupled with the admonition that there are laws and breaking them can lead to awful consequences. This is especially true in a prudish nation like America.

The only reason this right needs to be spelled out in the sexual guilt some people feel. This sort of guilt has always seemed ineffably strange to me. That disconnection is one the things that motivate the amount of sexually themed blogging I’ve done over the years.

Sex as cardiovascular exercise is surely good for the heart, the body overall. At least good sex. Or rather sex that lasts longer than a quickie or the reputed few minutes the average American male ejaculates. Unless you engage in some sort of unfathomably phenomenal form of masturbation it - however enjoyable - probably doesn’t do much for your aerobic conditioning.

The advice to have a sexual experience every day, since masturbation is included is surely superfluous. Many young males and female surely achieve an orgasm more than once daily.

But one should be careful with such exhortations lest you leave innocents feeling that they are inadequate or defective if they are happy when they miss their daily recommended requirement.

It encourages them to consider an ‘orgasm a day’ as a way reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke.

And if they can’t get sex, the leaflet says children should consider masturbation.
