Female Condoms

I knew some people use dental dams for cunnilingus but didn't know there was a prophylactic for women.

The Female Condom prevents unintended pregnancies and transmission of STIs, including HIV/AIDS. Clinical studies in the United States have demonstrated that the Female Condom is equivalent to male condom in preventing gonorrhea, trichononiasis and Chlamydia, and calculations based on correct and consistent use estimate 97% reduction in risk of HIV infection for each act of intercourse.

Secondly, the Female Condom is safe, acceptable to a wide range of women and men; it expands choice thus increasing protection; and its practice makes use easier. It is strong and durable because it is made of polyurethane which is not affected by temperature and dampness. Studies show that 50% to 70% of male and female participants found the Female Condom to be acceptable, and that providing women with the Female Condom resulted in an overall reduction in the number of unprotected acts of sexual intercourse. Consistent findings in the Female Condom programs suggest that women try the Female Condom three times before deciding whether they like it or not.

Lastly, the Female Condom provides additional emotional comfort, sense of security and control; it is a cost-effective addition in prevention programs; and it needs to be introduced strategically. The Female Condom is the only method providing dual protection over which women themselves exercise some control and empowerment. Research findings indicate that the Female Condom is not only cost-effective but also a cost-saving addition to prevention programs, particularly when specifically targeted to people who practice high-risk behaviors.
