Why love makes us act like fools
• Sexual Health
Neurophysiologists have scanned the brains of people in love. We all know that romance can make us act crazy, foolish. Failures in love can knock you down so deeply you don't think you want to live anymore.
As prior research has shown love increases the dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine is often likened to heroin or cocaine. When I've been in love I've certainly turned psychic handsprings.
It is closer in its neural profile to drives like hunger, thirst or drug craving, the researchers assert, than to emotional states like excitement or affection. As a relationship deepens, the brain scans suggest, the neural activity associated with romantic love alters slightly, and in some cases primes areas deep in the primitive brain that are involved in long-term attachment.
