Kartika Gunawan is not a typical men’s magazine playmate. But even though not a nipple was visible in her starring role in the first issue of Indonesian Playboy — in a concession to hardline Islamists calling for the publication to be banned — she faces more than two years in jail for indecency.
Jakarta’s police chief bowed to pressure from the radical Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) this week, proposing indecency charges against Ms Gunawan, another model and Indonesian Playboy editor Erwin Arnada. The magazine has been targeted as a symbol of Western decadence.

Kartika Gunawan, who posed in lingerie for the first edition, said she was worried but had the “full support” of her family.
“I am not sorry, because every decision I made was well considered. I was not trying to make a sensation,” Gunawan told reporters after being questioned by police Thursday. She previously worked as a relatively unknown television actress, appearing in soap operas. But she had not posed for other publications.
